Managing Difficult Conversations: A Manager's Guide

Theoretical Foundation: Radical Candor—challenging directly while caring personally.

"The quality of your workplace is determined by the quality of the conversations you are currently avoiding."

The Preparation Framework

Successful managers don't "wing it." They follow a structure before entering the room:

  • 1 Identify the "Third Story": Look at the issue from a neutral perspective.
  • 2 Separate Intent from Impact: Don't assume you know why they did it.

Communication Techniques

During the conversation, your goal is 'Curious Advocacy'—stating your perspective clearly while remaining genuinely curious about theirs. Use phrases like, "Help me understand your perspective on..." or "My concern is X, how does that look from your end?"

"Pro-Tip: If the conversation becomes highly emotional, it's okay to hit pause. Take a 15-minute break to allow amygdalae to settle before continuing."
